A guide to using AI in your application form
At AEG Europe, we welcome applications from everyone. Whilst we love reading the passionate and enthusiastic applications you send us, we’ve noticed a growing trend towards generic responses. This shift may be attributed to the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Generative AI (GenAI) tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, Gemini etc, to speed up application writing.
Whilst using AI tools can often save time, it does not guarantee you’ll be shortlisted or selected for an interview. We want candidates to let their unique personalities shine through their application, which will stand out to us more than an AI bot will.
Is it appropriate to use AI to help with my application?
Generating (and then copying, pasting and submitting) all or a significant portion of your application using an AI or GenAI tool and presenting it as original work, could be considered dishonest.
Recruiters and Hiring managers read all applications. Your application should reflect you as a person and why you want to apply for the job. It should describe your ambitions, skills and the experiences that make you suitable for the role you're applying for, and these should be in your own words. If your application form doesn't appear genuine, it could affect your chances of being shortlisted for a role.
However, we do understand that AI tools can be useful to applicants if used in a more authentic way. We have outlined some useful tips on using such tools below.
Useful Tips
You can use an AI tool to help inspire, clarify and articulate your own ideas, but don’t ask it to write your entire application form for you.
DO:
- Check everything that the AI tools suggest, particularly facts. They do get things wrong!
- Check readability, spelling, grammar, clarity, brevity, and impact
DON'T:
- Copy and paste from AI tools and use as final text.
- Use it to inflate your skills and experiences
AI can state facts but cannot reflect your own skills, experiences and thoughts in your voice, which is what we at AEG are looking for!
Final Thoughts
We value authenticity. If you want your application to stand out, using a generic AI-generated response isn’t going to make you stand out from the crowd, even if it promises to personalise the response. Interviews are for us to find out more about your skills and experiences, so this will give us a clear indication of whether the application matches the real person at interview, or if it’s something AI has made up.
The goal of using AI in your job application is to enhance your written application and showcase your best self. It’s not about creating a persona that isn’t you. Please use it wisely.
